How long do composite doors last? Whilst homeowners all have different tastes in styles and colours, everyone wants the investment in their door to last for as long as possible.
Quality composite doors are expected to last between 30 and 35 years, with several lasting even longer if you keep up a regular maintenance schedule. That means, spread over this period, the investment in a new composite door can actually be as little as £30 per year.
To ensure you get this value, we recommend applying light machine oil to the hinges, washing down the skin with soapy water and checking alignment, but there are a few other factors to be sure of before making up your mind and having one installed.
The quality of the installation itself, the level of weather your home experiences, and the type of composite door specified all play their part. We understand that investing in a new front door isn’t something you’ll want to do on a regular basis, so here’s a guide on how best to maintain performance if you do go ahead with one.

In most UK homes, composite doors last between 30 and 35 years, comfortably outliving traditional wooden doors (which often need replacing after 15-20 years) and even most uPVC doors (which average around 20-25 years).
This impressive long lifespan comes down to their unique construction. A composite door is made from a combination of materials, usually a solid timber core or foam core, wrapped in tough GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) skins. They’ve become the UK’s fastest growing entrance door material, largely because of this longevity, but also their elite thermal performance and desirable looks (they can even replicate the appearance of timber!).
Although we’ve said that the lifespan of a composite door can reach 35 years, there are a few things you can do to give it the best chance of doing so, as it isn’t guaranteed.
Cheaper composite doors on the market often use lower-grade foam cores and thinner outer skins, which simply won’t stand the test of time the way a quality composite door will.
To get the best lifespan, look for doors with a solid timber core (like our Solidor range) or a draught-proof, thermally efficient core (like our Leamore composite doors). The thicker and denser the door materials, the better your door will resist denting and general wear.
Our climate in the UK is one of the world’s most unpredictable. Unlike some nations which experience sun or cold temperatures year-round, we have a real mixture which can confuse your front door. One day, they’re having snow thrown at them, the next they’re battling heat and the subsequent insects wanting to peel their paint.
South-facing doors, in particular, can suffer from prolonged direct sunlight, where UV rays may fade colour on lower-quality products over time.
Composite doors are specifically built to handle this. The GRP outer skin acts like armour against the elements, and on our Solidor doors, Coolskin technology helps the door stay cooler in sunlight to prevent expansion and fading.
Even the best door in the world won’t last if it’s poorly fitted. A bad installation can lead to draughts, water ingress and locks that don’t align properly – all of which shorten your door’s lifespan dramatically.
That’s why we’d always recommend choosing an installer with the right accreditations. We’re FENSA-registered, which means every door installation we carry out meets strict UK building regulations. We’ve also been featured on BBC One’s DIY SOS, what a mark of quality that is!

We offer two outstanding ranges of composite doors, each designed to give homeowners better security, impressive thermal efficiency and lasting aesthetic appeal.
The Solidor is a premium composite front door built around a 48mm solid timber core, that’s 10% thicker than most composite doors on the market. This core is wrapped in tough plastic edge banding and bonded with two thermoplastic skins, giving the door a beautifully solid feel and the aesthetic appeal of timber doors without any of the maintenance headaches.
Benefits of Solidor composite doors:

The Leamore composite door is designed and manufactured in-house at our state-of-the-art factory in Bloxwich. It features an inner core of LVL (laminated veneer lumber) encased with composite stiles and rails for added protection, finished with a grained GRP outer skin that looks beautiful for years.
Because we build them ourselves, we have total control over lead times, in-house quality testing and design flexibility. That means faster turnaround for you and the confidence of knowing every door has been checked by our own experts before it leaves the factory.
Benefits of the Leamore composite door:

Want to get the absolute most out of the life of a composite door? Follow these simple steps:
